Was it Bigfoot?

(Late 70's early 80's)

I don't remember what age I was when my Dad told me this story, but I remember the details of it because it's lasted with me ever since hearing it. My Dad and his best friend Teddy were up in the woods near the Wolf Creek area (northern Alabama) doing some  hunting. I don't know much about his friend other than he had the same name as my Dad.  I also don't know how often they hunted that area or what types of firearms they had that day.
But what they saw, I also have no idea of what it's called. My dad and his friend were walking uphill to their hunting spot when up ahead a creature well over 6ft was staring back at them. Stopping in their tracks to determine if there's a threat or not, allowed time for my Dad to comprehend that this is not a human being they are looking at! Humans aren't supposed to be covered in a thick coat of fur! Humans don't have long sharp claws for hands! Most of all, humans don't have beaks! My Dad says it had the face almost like an owl. Round, white, and with a beak. The body was solid and looked to be between 350-450 pounds.
Not being able to determine what this thing might be, had gotta spook someone who has spent a lot of time in and around the woods. Armed with a firearm, my Dad shoots it, and does an about face and they start running back downhill. He was certain he hit it because he heard the impact hit it's body. The bullet never dropped the creature, it just disappeared into the woods. That's when they starting running back to the truck. I don't know how far it was from where they saw the creature to the truck, but by the time they got to the truck, this creature was standing there. But how? It was shot, and went into the woods. This creature had to be fast, not only having taken a bullet, but it ran off through the woods and passed them up getting back to where they parked.
My Dad said this creature stared at him and his friend and then lifted its arms in the air as if to say why did you shoot me? Moments later it walked back into the woods, and still panicking my Dad and his friend scrambled into the truck and high- tailed it out of there!
Days later someone reported animals being skinned in that area of where this had happened. I am not sure if the two incidents are related to each other, but this story has been around in our family since the day it happened. My Dad has never really said what he thought it was, he just called it a spook. When he wasn't around, I'd ask my Mom if what he said really happened, she said she remembers him telling her that story when he got home from hunting that day. She was convinced he was telling the truth. My Dad has passed away now, but before he died. My older brother asked him again at the hospital if that story was true. He said yes, it was the truth. I don't know if anyone has ever seen anything like this.
