High School Friend

This story took place in the 1990's
Location: Winter Garden/Lakeland Florida

I remember in high school there was this real cute guy by the name of Leland Albury. But everyone called him Skipper. Well known family in Key West Florida. He was a good friend of my female cousin. After high school, he went into the Marines, he was a year or two older than me. When my husband was in Viet Nam, I found out that Skipper had been killed by stepping on a mine. I decided I would go to his funeral to see what it would be like if my husband were killed. Skipper had a full blown military funeral, so sad! Many, many years later I went to see the traveling wall of all the Viet Nam soldiers that were killed, Their names were engraved in that wall. This was in Lakeland, Florida. After finding his name on the wall, I traced a piece of paper with pencil. It gave me his name, age, branch of service and how he was killed.
Late that night when I went to bed, I smelled this god-awful odor coming from under my bed. I got up and asked my boyfriend at the time if he was burning a candle. He was watching TV in the living room. He stated he was not. I told him what I was smelling, a very strong odor of really old flowers. The smell was burning my nose. Every night there after the smell came again. I took a chance and told a co-worker of mine what was going on. She told me to burn that piece of paper i traced Skipper's name on. She said it was evil!. Well, I couldn't burn it, my mom knew Skip's mom and I figured his mom would like to have it.
The odor was getting worse. During the day time, and it started to follow me at work. My boyfriend had a cat named Tiger. He used to sleep under our bed, but since I had that paper, he would not go near the bed. Once, one of my son's was visiting and he was sitting at the dining room table. My son asks, Mom, do you smell Skip now? I said yes, it's right beside me. He said that as soon as Tiger got near me, his fur stood up and stopped in his tracks. The smell was just driving me crazy. Sometimes I had to walk outside for some fresh air.
My co-worker again told me to burn that paper. I kept it in a drawer. So after about 3 months of this smell I decided to burn that paper. I placed it in the sink and put a match to it. Done! Well, that very night about midnight, I woke up to another smell. This time it was the odor of burning flesh. The smell was so strong, I thought I was going to be sick.Next morning I told my co-worker what I did and what I smelled. She asked me what time did I smell it. I told her, she said it was the same exact time she, her boyfriend and a pastor were praying about it very hard. Ironic? You be the judge. After that, the smell was getting less and less and after about a month or two the smell was completely gone.
