South Alabama Strangeness
This happened in the fall several years back, (2016ish) in southern Alabama just off Hwy 231. My brother and I went to scout out an area in the woods to sit after dark. We had found a tree stand and a small creek several hundred yards inside the woods and said we could come back to that area later on. About dusk we headed in with some spotlights. We could not find the area we had located earlier in the afternoon, so we settled on an area that had a small clearing with tree stump in the middle.
This was fall and there were tons of leaves on the ground that made all kinds of noise when moving around. We cleared out the leaves from the by our feet area, so it would be quiet if we needed to move our legs, then we sat with our backs against the tree stump facing opposite directions. The clearing was about 30 ft around us and heavily wooded. We agreed no lights on.
We sat for a while and heard nothing more than small rodents hopping around, and usual night sounds. After a while we started hearing this swishing sound. Almost as if someone had a broom sweeping leaves around. Was strange, but that's what is sounded like. It was off in the distance to my right, and it probably went on for about an hour. When that stopped, soon we heard something walking. Past small set of woods surrounding us was a low area like a gulley. It sounded like it was coming towards us in the gulley. It was loud, the footfalls.And it sounded like on 2 feet.
We did not think it was a deer, but if it was, it was gonna be one heck of a deer from how loud the steps were and it wasn't even that close to us yet. It kept coming closer and closer to where we were. I leaned over and whispered to my brother that it sounded like it was gonna come right towards us. Sure enough we hear it start coming thru the woods, walking on the leaves and the trees made it easy to track where it was. I again quietly said its going to come out right in front of me. I am facing the wood line where I can hear it slowly walking towards me. When it was outside the wood line ( there was no more pushing the trees and brambles aside to get thru) and standing in front of the woods... me... I told him Lets both hit it with the lights! I truly was afraid it was gonna step on me if it came any closer. At the same , we both hit the wood line in front of me, huge spotlights lighting the area up.
There was NOTHING there. Nothing ran, no sound of running thru the leaves or trees. Nothing. We just were like..what? No sound. There is no way anything could have left the area without making a lot of noise. We slowly stepped towards the wood line shining our lights everywhere to see what it was. We checked up in the trees, the ground. Still nothing. We were just perplexed as to what the heck walked thru the woods and just disappeared!!! We then started making our way thru the wooded area down towards the gulley. We moved very slowly to be able to hear anything moving around us or running away. We never saw or heard anything. Then we felt like we were lost, very disorientated in the woods. It was a very strange feeling, like we were in a void. I don't know how long we roamed around before we finally got our bearings and got back to where we came in the woods.
It was the strangest thing. I know something was standing in front of me less than about 20-25 feet. We heard it come out of the woods towards us and stop. There was never another sound from when we turned on our lights. It is truly one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me. And scary to think that we could not even see whatever it was coming thru the woods at us.
